Internet Business Models - Where To Start
Internet Business Models - Where To Start
By Martin Hatch
One of the keys to being successful at anything is finding a working model on which to base your strategy. This is true more than ever when considering how to start an online business. Your greatest chance of success is to look for internet business models that are already working and try to replicate them exactly. Along the way, you may find ways to improve the system you have chosen in order to make it more efficient and make it your own.
The first decision you will have to make is the kind of internet business model you wish to follow. Doing business on the internet means that you have many options from which to choose. There are plenty of online businesses that provide a service (backing up data, managing bank accounts, integrating social media, etc.). However if you don't have any technical knowledge there would be a huge cost to get started in this business. There is also the possibility of creating a website to sell a product. Again if you don't already have a product to sell you most likely need a lot of capital to create one. This is true with the exception of an information product (one of the easiest and most profitable). Finally, you can create a blog or website to sell affiliate products (another person's product). This type of business has the least barrier to entry because pretty much anyone can do it.
After you have decided on the business you want to start online you need to find someone who is successful in that arena already. In the case of a blogging you could do this by searching a topic that is interesting to you. Then choose the first blog you find on that subject. If they are ranked highly on Google chances are they are a successful blogger. I would first study their blog, looking for things like their banner image, theme, and layout. Then read a few articles to see how they are connecting with their reader. Also take note of their information capture or advertising because this is where they are generating income. You can subscribe to their email list and RSS feed to monitor the way they maintain their relationship with readers. Finally, I would reach out and contact this person. Most people are happy to help their readers and will have no problem sharing about their experience. Ask them what they did to get started, what they would have done differently and what mistakes they have made.
All start-up businesses make mistakes, especially on the internet. The trick is to minimize those mistakes. The fastest way to minimize your mistakes is to emulate someone who is already successful. So I suggest you find your role model, someone who is where you want to be in a couple years. Follow them, and take the actions they take. Before you know it, you too will have a success online business.
