Your Work Schedule - Why It's So Important When You Work Online
Your Work Schedule - Why It's So Important When You Work Online
By Angela D Clark
When you run an online business, you're completely free from the regular workplace hassles - no boss, no meetings, no office maintenance duties, and best of all, no work schedule. You can work any time you want to. This is great, but once you've been working online for a while, you'll find out that you need a schedule.
It's a bit ironic, isn't it? You've fought hard to escape the 9-to-5 only to recreate it at home! But there are several reasons why this is a good idea. The first is productivity. It's just not easy to get things done when you don't have a set schedule. When you create a schedule, you can guarantee that you're going to get X amount of hours of work each day.
There's an even more important reason you should schedule your online work and it has to do with work-life balance. Your online business requires lots of TLC. In fact, you'll feel like you have to always babysit it at first. The trouble is that you find yourself racing to the computer during dinner or responding to work-related emails Sunday night when you should be watching TV.
With your schedule, you have work time and non-work time. You know when to be focused and productive, and when to turn off the computer and go outside.
How to Set Your Schedule
There's no one schedule that works for everybody. In order to create your own, ask yourself these questions:
- When are you most productive?
- When do you like to work?
- When do you NOT like to work?
- How many hours a day can/should you work?
- When do you have to take care of other responsibilities?
- How often do you need breaks?
You might have to experiment a bit to find the answers to these questions. Try working mornings for a week and then try evenings. Experiment with working in 1-hour chunks with a short break versus working 2-hours. Push yourself to see how long you can work in a day and time it so you know. Once you've got the answers to these questions, making your schedule is a piece of cake.
Advanced Scheduling for the Time Management Junkies
Creating a work schedule can actually be lots of fun. It's kind of like a game. You can take all the regular tasks you need to do each day or week and schedule each one of them. For example, set aside a certain amount of time for content writing, building backlinks, forum posting, site maintenance, etc.
If you don't know how long each of these tasks should take, there are two ways to do this. One is to simply spend a week or two timing them. This is the same thing you do when you make a monthly budget. Monitor and you'll get a realistic idea.
The other method is to decide first how long you should do something. This is good sometimes for tasks like forum posting or social media sites that can eat up your time really quickly.
No matter what kind of work you do, you need a work schedule. The beauty of working for yourself isn't that you can live without one, but that you can create the perfect schedule for yourself, and nobody else can do that.
