Making Money Online - Are Article Directories Really a Goldmine?
By Leanne P Vicente

Sometimes looking for ways to earn money online seems a bit like burrowing in sand. The more you delve, the more you are swamped by thousands of ideas, articles, blogs, eBooks and links...but how to get to the grain of truth? What really works? That's why it is so refreshing when people tell it like it is... For example, whilst submitting articles to directories to build traffic to my blog...as all intent web marketers do, it occurred to me...how cool to have your own directory?

Can I make money doing that? Some research later and it appears I can purchase a simple script and hey, presto, start raking it in through AdSense, whilst people submit their articles. Sound too good to be true? Maybe...just as I was about to start researching the best script to buy, I came across an article by Ric Raftis that stopped me in my tracks. The article was a few years old but it definitely had the ring of truth to it. It pointed out several important factors:

  • Article directories are a lot of work. Some-one needs to oversee the quality control and classification of articles.

  • If you don't have traffic, you have nothing. Thousands of articles do not necessarily give you traffic and without that AdSense alone as a money-making tool will not work. The article author Ric Raftis writes: "At the date of writing, I have nearly 5,000 articles in my directory and over 10,000 pages indexed in Google and today, according to my stats, I attracted all of 35 new visitors. My AdSense income for the site today was zero".

  • An AdWords campaign can leave you with a loss if not implemented and monitored carefully.

  • Your main advantage is your "email list" of authors and the ways you find to capitalise on it.

This really pressed home to me something I guess I already knew...building traffic is everything in the world of online income generation. If you know how to build traffic, you can make money online...whether selling products, information or services. But it takes time and lots of effort! So before you go spending money on website creation, no matter how good your idea may be, think about your marketing plan. It is vital and the key to your success...but get it right and you will be building your sandcastle in no time!
