It's amazing that so many people wander around the online business scene looking for tips, tricks, and that magic "silver bullet" that will game the system and make their business appear on the first page of Google. There is so much energy wasted on finding ways to trick people into landing on a site that many businesses fail to look at the next step: What will they offer that visitor once they get there?
In the last year, it should be clear that Google and their army of technical engineers are going to continue to work hard to weed through all the internet garbage in an effort to give users the best search experience on the planet.
So, with that in mind, it's a good idea to concentrate your online business marketing efforts in areas that simply use some good 'ole fashion business sense - with the benefits of our modern technical toys!
Great content: It doesn't matter how great you are at driving traffic to your site if your visitor is disappointed once they get there!
This reminds me of a cross country road trip I took with my family when was a little girl. Our family of 6 jumped into a station wagon (gasp! We didn't have to wear seatbelts back then!) and proceeded to drive across the United States.
After miles of corn fields, potato fields and cows, the landscape started to get a little more interesting. Up from nowhere, in the middle of nowhere, huge, colorful, highway signs started to pop up announcing "Wall Drug - 475 miles ahead"
We started looking forward to seeing those billboards! In fact, we even re-routed our trip to actually go visit this "Wall Drug." What exactly was this Mid-western wonder?
(Note - Wikipedia notes that the Wall Drug Company spends over $400K on billboards every year!)
As it turns out, Wall Drug is the most famous (or infamous) tourist trap in the U.S.! As kids, we thought it was pretty cool, what with the dinosaur and all - but I think that my dad was left scratching his head and figuring how to get back on course!
Anyway - great, simple effective advertising to get traffic. And they do, in fact offer free ice water and take in a good amount of money every year as a result of the traffic they drive (literally) to their location every year - but you have to wonder, "How many people actually go back?"
If your online business is meant to be just a novelty, or one-hit wonder, this approach would work. However, if you want online business success that will build and grow year after year, you better plan on providing the kind of content, information, answers, products, and experience that you customer wants!
In the end, you don't want all the hype, bells and whistles to cover up a useless or mediocre product.
So, How Do You Provide Great Content for your Online Business?
1. Research: You only know what you know - fill in the blanks and keep current on the trends of your niche with consistent research. Set up Google Alerts for your main keywords and monitor what's being written
2. Follow the Chatter: It's great to be an expert in your niche, but does that match up with the questions that your customers are asking and the problems and concerns they have? Keep tabs on the Social Scene (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Forums, etc...) and understand what your target customers are talking about. Yes, while you're there you can post comments and links that lead back to your site for a backlink - but always add value to the conversation! Make the link worth the time.
3. Create Products: Armed with your research, and armed with an understanding of your customer's needs, create a new product that provides an answer or solution or fills in the gaps of an existing product.
Bottom line for Simple Online Business Success
Thorough understanding of the subject with research; Great Content that's relevant to the reader; Great products that serve the needs and offer solutions for your customer.
Yep - it's really that simple.
Yes, you will still need a consistent and persistent online marketing strategy to push that information out into the world wide web. But put you energy into a great system, not a great "scheme". Google will reward your good efforts and quality content!
