How To Use The Internet To Do Proper Research

Using the Internet for Effective Research

Using the Internet for Effective Research
By Harvey McEwan

If you were in school, college, University or even just at a place of work in the early 00s, you will no doubt be familiar with your teachers, lecturers, boss and colleagues imploring you not to use the internet to research subjects, because any information taken from the internet couldn't be checked and verified unlike information from books and journals, which is checked by a team of researchers and editors.

However, now, the information available online is considered to be a lot more helpful and truthful than it used to be, because, thanks to the introduction of a number of websites, such as Twitter, Wikipedia and news sites like the BBC, the internet is now viewed as a great source of information, especially on news stories, as a number of the world's leading news corporations and newspapers also have websites.

So now that you know that the internet is far more useful now than it ever was, how do you use it in order to research a certain topic? Well, whether you're researching something like computer technology or ATM software for a school project, your dissertation or even for a presentation at work you have to know which sites to go to in order to find out the relevant information that you need. For some people, this may consist of going to your local library's website and finding what books are available on your chosen subject. However, if this isn't an option, then start your research by doing a search for your topic using an online search engine, such as Google, Bing or Yahoo. Then have a look through the results and see what pages and sites show up, look for news sites, and academic sites to start with, as they will probably have the most up-to-date information available. By looking at articles on these sites, you may be able to identity certain leading authors or authorities on the subject of computer technology, or ATM management software, you can then use their names, or even an organisation that they work for in order to find more information. So if you've been tasked with writing about ATM software, and let's say a woman called Patrice Lennox has written a number of articles on the subject, then look for more of Patrice Lennox's work by using a search engine.

Once you've identified a handful of websites, or individuals who write about your chosen subject, then keep going back to these websites, and their work to see if there's anything new happening. So bookmark all the useful sites, and see if they can recommend any other sites that could help you do your research that little bit better. You could even sign up to a Google alert that informs you of when one of these sites or one of these authors has published new content.

So remember that the internet can be a very good place to find out relevant information for a certain topic, just make sure that you know where the right place to go is for subjects as nice as computer technology and ATM management software.
