How to Buy a Domain Name in 3 Easy Steps
How to Buy a Domain Name in 3 Easy Steps
By Chris K Hoff
This article will tell you how to buy a domain name quickly and easily. Despite many claims to the contrary, buying a domain name is a very straightforward process. In just three easy steps you could have your very own space reserved on the web!
What You Will Need:
* 3 - 4 possible domain names picked out (you may not get your first choice!)
* A credit or debit card OR a PayPal account in your name. Never allow someone else to buy your domain with their payment information!
* 10 - 15 minutes of free time.
Where to Buy a Domain:
Some sites which you may buy domains from include:
1. NameCheap
2. Domain.com
3. Register.com
A great domain name is very important to the success (or failure) of any website. If you already have a company or you're famous, then the domain name selection will be pretty easy. If, however, you are starting a brand new business online, then you will need to take extra time and care to choose your domain name, as it will be both your company name and how people will remember you.
Step 1: Choose a Great Domain Name
The basic recommendations for the best domains are: they must be easy to spell, easy to remember, and.com (no.net,.ws, etc.) domains. Many people may disagree with the last one, but in my 15+ years of experience, people remember.com domains far more easily than any others.
Step 2: Register the Domain
When you have a domain name you would like to buy, visit a registrar such as nameCheap.com, godaddy.com, or domain.com. Note that many webhosts also offer domain name registration, so you can complete the registration with the same company as you host your site with if you wish.
Enter the name to be sure it is available. if it is, continue to step 3. If it isn't - you will need to come up with another name. Try different spellings of the name you would like (I.E. "Groundz" instead of "Grounds"), but avoid hyphens and special characters if possible.
Step 3: Complete Checkout
Continue to purchase the domain. Determine if you'd like to register the domain for 1 year or more, as you will sometimes get a discounted price for longer registrations periods. During the process you will probably need to create a username and password. Be sure to keep or remember these for later!
Buying your domain is very simple and fast - and it is only the beginning! Once you have your domain registered, you will need to link it to your hosting company. Then you can begin building your site and the true fun can begin!
